Bushman Plains Camp
A wonderful chance to experience Bushman culture first-hand as well as take game drives, walks and mokoro rides in the Okavango Delta. This Bushman-owned, four-tent camp is the quintessential, pared down safari experience.
Bushman Plains is the authentic safari experience devoid of frills and distractions. Majority owned and run by Bushmen, this is an exciting opportunity to learn not only about the wildlife and environment but also about the culture and daily lives of the people who live here.
The camp accommodates a maximum of eight people and you soon get to know your fellow guests, guides and camp staff. You have a mix of game drives which include off-road driving, night drives, walking safaris and mokoro rides, all led by highly skilled Bushman guides and trackers, as you gain a feel for life in the Okavango Delta. Additional activities such as a hot air balloon ride and a helicopter flight to and tour of Tsodilo Hills, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its Bushman art, can be arranged at extra cost.
Back in camp you can relax in the mess tent out of the sun’s heat, as you chat with other travellers, and later around the campfire with storytelling very much a part of Bushman culture. The chef conjures up flavourful food using the available local ingredients. Cuisine is mainly western but there are chances to sample local fare, too.
Tents are simple but far from basic and include comfy beds, an en-suite safari shower, solar lighting and a private sitting area.
This is a mobile camp, moving among sites in the 150,000 hectare wilderness area, reflecting the nomadic lifestyle of it Bushman owners and optimising game viewing. That said, the camp usually remains in the same spot while guests are staying, moving between visits. It is reached by flying to Kadizora airstrip, followed by a game viewing drive of about 90 minutes.
Times to go:
The Okavango Delta is a year round destination with distinct seasons. The dry season runs from April to October and visibility peaks as grasses die back and foliage decreases. The green season, November to March, is the breeding season with good chances of seeing young and lots of predators. Conditions are excellent for photography. Game viewing is good year round.
