Deception Valley Lodge

Deception Valley Lodge is the ideal base from which to explore the Kalahari environment and spend time with the local inhabitants, Naru-speaking Bushmen. They will be your guides as you go on day and night game drives and bush walks. Staying here you’ll enjoy an exciting blend of wildlife and cultural experiences. All this just a half hour flight from Maun.

Food is a great mix of African ingredients and modern ideas culminating in hearty, wholesome meals featuring ingredients like venison, ostrich eggs, vegetables grown in the lodge’s garden and a real local treat, the Kalahari truffle. The aroma of freshly baked bread greets you each morning at breakfast, while in mid-afternoon there’ll be tea and cakes, later followed by a three course dinner to round off the day. Meals are eaten round a large dining table, on the open deck or in the boma by lamplight.

The dining room, bar and lounge form the core of the lodge. They’re inviting areas decorated in rich tones and filled with interesting Bushman artefacts. The open deck is positioned by the waterhole so you can view animals and birds as they come to drink. Just off the main area there’s a quiet library where you can catch up with some reading, and a curio shop with a range of locally-made handicrafts. On a hot day you’ll welcome a cooling swim in the pool.

There are eight guest chalets, standing on stilts above the sandy ground and linked to the central area by raised walkways. The high-ceilinged bedroom is cooled by ceiling fans and there’s a minibar stocked with refreshments. The large en-suite bathroom has a freestanding rolltop bath plus a separate outdoor shower, open to the sky. Bathrobes are provided for you. One of the chalets has 2 inter-connecting bedrooms, convenient for families.

Tuskwana the Elephant is your guide to choosing acommodation that make a difference to their community or environment. And you can click him for our TRAVEL + PROTECT page.

Tuskwana the Elephant likes this because…

“The 28,000 hectare reserve, once farm and hunting land has been transformed back to the wilderness it once was. Going forward they are working with other organisations to restore ancient migratory routes with a vision to create a corridor between CKGR and Makgadigadi Game Reserve. The lodge makes every effort to keep their footprint as small as possible. This is done by utilising solar power, growing vegetables and minimizing waste. Going forward there are plans to introduce electric game drive vehicles.”

And don’t forget … for every booking we take, Botswana Specialists (which is part of Tribes Travel) plants trees in deforested areas of Africa through The Travel Forest, and we also back The Tribes Foundation’s conservation and social projects.

You can click on Tuskwana to read more about our TRAVEL + PROTECT initiatives on our Tribes website, including ways you can help with our ongoing projects.
