Grassland Safari Lodge overview
Grassland Safari Lodge, also known as Grasslands Bushman Lodge, is on the western edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Staying here you’ll learn about both the culture of the native Basarwa and the animal and bird life of the region.
You’ll have chances to spend time with local Basarwa (San Bushman) people as they go about their daily lives, searching for food and medicinal plants, making fire and preparing meals, as well as witnessing communal games and story-telling ceremonies. The Basarwa are happy to share their culture and experiences with visitors. Wildlife lovers will enjoy game drives and walking safaris and bird watching walks in the Kalahari. Horse riding is a popular option, available to riders of all levels. Grassland Lodge is involved in the predator protection project, looking after creatures that are in danger of being shot by farmers and educating visitors about their plight. Animals often kept here include cheetah, lion, leopard and wild dog. The animals are released back into the wild when a safer region has been found for them.
There are 8 guest chalets. Interiors are large and light chalets with comfy beds, armchairs, wardrobes and dressing tables. All have private bathrooms with a shower, hand basin and toilet. There is 24-hour hot water.
The 2 large buildings at the heart of the lodge house the lounge, bar and dining area, set beneath a high thatched roof. They look out to the brick-built firepit and the waterhole a short distance away where you’ll see a variety of wildlife by day and night when it is floodlit. This is a popular place to enjoy your sundowner drink each evening, watching the animals gather for their evening drinks! There’s also a large swimming pool which comes into its own in the middle of the day when you need to cool off.
