Khwai Concession, adjacent to Moremi Game Reserve, Okavango Delta
Tented safari camp
Hyena Pan Tented Camp enjoys a peaceful and tranquil setting in the game rich Khwai Concession, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. Nestled under a canopy of mopane trees the camp enjoys views out onto the Pan, a water source and hive of activity for wildlife all year round.
The main area is open plan. The roof is made of thatch, keeping things cool during the heat of the day and the sides are open to the front, leading out onto the spacious raised deck where you will find a small pool. The deck leads onto a covered lounge area. There are in fact two lounge areas, so you can take your pick. The main area is also the location for the dining room. To the front of the deck is the firepit, the spot for story swapping before and after dinner each night. There is also an outdoor boma which overlooks the waterhole, floodlit at night.
There are 9 tents at Hyena Pan, catering for 18 people. They are traditional in design with entry gained by tent flaps at the front leading into the sleeping area where you will find comfortable twin beds topped with crisp, fresh linen and duvets. There’s a wardrobe and luggage rack where you can store your things and an electronic safe for valuables. There is bedside lighting provided by solar power and in the en-suite bathroom your shower has hot running water powered by gas geysers.
Khwai has the perfect location, it is accessible by road from Maun and also by air, the Khwai airstrip is close by. Whilst you are out on activities you will be able to explore this beautiful corner of Botswana. As well as exploring the private concession that is only accessible to Hyena Pan guests, you will also be able to explore the Khwai River area and the Moremi Game Reserve too. The beauty of staying outside Moremi is that you can experience guided walks on the concession, something that is not allowed in any of the national parks. Walking is a completely different experience to game driving and gives you a different perspective of the wilderness and the wildlife that you may come across. It’s definitely worth doing if you can.
Hyena Pan boasts a sunken hide, hidden from view at ground level. It is a wonderful opportunity to spend a little quiet time in the hide which faces a waterhole in a private area of the concession. You will have no interruptions except for the wildlife, which will be oblivious to your presence, it’s an ideal place to get some excellent photographs of the visitors who wander down to drink. Elephant, roan, kudu, giraffe and warthog are known to frequent this little eden.
Every day in Botswana ends with a sundowner before you sit down to a delicious three course meal. Afterwards you can settle down with a coffee or liqueur and watch bush TV (the fire) before turning in for a good night’s sleep.
