Jao Camp overview

Jao is currently closed for a rebuild and is expected to open in June 2019

Jao is an exclusive and very luxurious camp on a private reserve in the Okavango Delta.  The camp itself is almost as much an attraction as the unique wilderness it is set in, and the price tag matches this exclusivity.

Jao Camp looks out over seasonal floodplains with lily-filled water channels and small islands, and the main areas and guest tents all benefit from the scenic views.  The main building is arranged over 2 floors and includes a lower level library and sitting room and, upstairs, a large open plan lounge, bar and dining area. To the front of the building, reached along a raised wooden walkway, there’s a circular deck and firepit and beyond this is the jetty. A little distance apart there are 2 plunge pools which come into their own in the heat of day. Special features at Jao include a spa where you can treat yourself to a wide range of treatments, and a gym.

Water-based activities are the main focus here, with both motorboats and mokoros available. They offer contrasting experiences, one enabling you to explore areas beyond the camp and the other providing a silent voyage amongst the water channels. Glass-bottomed mokoros give fascinating glimpses of the world beneath the surface. You’ll also have chances to take half and full-day game drives, thrilling night drives and to go fishing. The viewing hide offers chances to view wildlife in detail and doubles as a sleep-out for up to 4 people.

The canvas and thatch suites are built on high wooden decks hidden amongst the trees. They are divided into sitting, sleeping and bathing areas. The whole front wall is made up of sliding glass doors that open onto the wide veranda where there are chairs and hammocks. The bathroom has ceramic was basins and a full-size bathtub and a shower. There’s also an outdoor shower. A short walkway leads from the main tent to the shaded sala, where you recline on the daybed in total seclusion, perfect for an early afternoon siesta.

Jao offers sophisticated luxury in the bush. Whilst it can offer great wildlife experiences, it tends to attract people who are looking for a high level of luxury for a break in the wilderness, rather than people whose first waking thought is wildlife viewing.
