Kubu Lodge overview
Set on the banks of the Chobe River, this privately owned and run lodge is a lovely place to relax and to use a base when exploring Chobe National Park. The lodge’s thirty hectares of grounds extend down to the riverside and include a lawn shaded by huge ebony and fig trees where you’ll find a selection of daybeds as well as a sparkling outdoor saltwater swimming pool and sunbathing area.
The eleven individual chalets are made of wood and thatch and set on platforms reached by a short flight of steps from the garden. Facilities include tea and coffee maker, safe and mosquito nets. There are ceiling fans to maintain a cool temperature. En-suite bathrooms have running hot and cold water, a shower, flush toilet, hairdryer and shaver point. Each has a private viewing deck looking out over the lawn.
Social areas include the restaurant with its large terrace for al fresco dining. The lodge offers not gourmet, but good African and European dishes. There is also a sociable lounge-bar where you’ll meet and share stories with other guests and there’s a reading lounge for quieter moments plus a gift shop stocking local handicrafts.
At Kubu Lodge you’re well positioned for excursion to the national park, which you can explore by boat or 4x4 vehicle. You can take a boat trip to the confluence of the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers, the point at which four countries meet, visit a nearby crocodile farm or reptile park and go fishing. Day trips to the world-famous Victoria Falls, about an hour’s drive away, can be arranged too. Nearer to home there’s a sign posted 2 kilometre nature walk which will delight bird watchers, with some 400 species recorded locally.
Kubu Lodge is not a luxury choice, but it’s comfortable and welcoming, and one of the smaller and more personal places to stay in Kasane.
