Mombo Camp overview
Mombo Camp is just off the northern tip of the prestigious Chief’s Island, at the heart of Moremi Game Reserve, an area with high concentrations of wildlife including the Big 5, and consequently the scene of the some of the best wildlife viewing in the whole of Africa. The accommodation is of a quality to match, this being one of the country’s most luxurious (and expensive!) safari camps. For a smaller and more intimate version of this camp, consider its sister camp, Little Mombo, to which it is connected by walkway.
Mombo was rebuilt to a superb high standard and reopened in 2018. It is built in a grove of tall trees that provide shade in the day. The 9 spacious tents overlook the floodplain where wildlife can be seen from dawn to dusk. Interiors offer refined, tasteful accommodation with polished wooden floors, brass lamps, blinds and filled sherry decanters. The bedroom, with its huge bed and custom-made linens, and the adjacent lounge, have doors that open onto the wide veranda. At the other side of the bedroom, the bathroom has twin basins and indoor shower and luxurious copper bathtub. You’ll also have an outdoor shower. Outside on the deck you have your own shaded sala where you can sit and contemplate the beauty of the African landscape and a plunge pool for refreshing dips.
The heart of the camp is the living and dining area where you’ll spend the hottest part of each day, resting and sheltering from the sun. Meals are also served outside on the deck and in the atmospheric boma. The food is of the highest order and even includes fresh seafood. The library of books is a good place to top up your wildlife knowledge between game drives. There’s a plunge pool on the deck. The campfire is the setting for atmospheric sundowner and after dinner drinks. From each of these areas you’ll be able to gaze out over the plains and watch the parade of passing wildlife.
Game drives will show you the variety and richness of the region’s animal life and you’ll never ceased to be impressed by the wildlife which includes elephant, hippo, red lechwe, leopard, prides of lion, and even re-introduced black and white rhinos. There is a hide 20 minutes from camp, where you can watch the wildlife wander by. In the evenings regular conservation talks are held, highlighting the plight of the rhino. An optional extra at Mombo and Little Mombo is the opportunity to enjoy a scenic helicopter flight.
