Tented safari camp
Pelo Camp offers an authentic safari experience in an unspoilt waterfront setting. Located on a small heart-shaped island, this 5-tent camp is deliberately simple, eschewing TV, radio and Wi-Fi, keeping the emphasis firmly on the environment and its wildlife.
Activities are mainly water-based, with boat safaris and mokoro rides enabling you to access rivers, lagoons and water channels for views of hippo, elephant, lechwe, dainty reed frogs and birds including storks and kingfishers. You can also accompany a guide on a walk on one of the many nearby islands for a different view of the flora and fauna.
At the camp you can chat with other travellers as you relax on one of the sofas or armchairs in the airy lounge that leads to the open viewing deck, cool off with a dip in the plunge pool, the prefect spot from which to watch the sun set over the water. Mealtimes are a highlight, most served al fresco on the terrace, though there’s also a dining tent with an elegantly laid table. After dark the camp is lit by lanterns, enhancing the intimate ambience.
Tents are canvas with timber frames and mesh windows, a traditional safari design, set on wooden decks. Bedrooms are large enough to include easy chairs, freestanding lamps and clothes and luggage storage. Each has an en-suite bathroom with a copper hand basin, bamboo-screened shower and dressing area. You also have an open-air bucket shower, another classic safari feature.
Pelo camp is open from 1st March to 30th November annually.
