Selinda Adventure Trail overview

In 2009  subtle movement of tectonic plates caused the waters of the Okavango River to flow where they had not done for nearly three decades, flowing east along the previously dry Selinda Spillway. This opened the way for an adventurous experience, a canoeing trail along the Spillway. Nature is never predictable here in the Okavango Delta and the waters levels vary each year so we now offer a canoeing and walking trail or a pure walking trail – depending on the water levels – each exciting in their own right.

The canoeing adventure entails a traditional canoe and the walking safari follows the course of the water, exploring side channels of the Selinda Spillway along the way.  The experience you are offered will depend on the water levels when you arrive.  Either way, it will be an unforgettable adventure which starts at the Selinda Airstrip where you hop off your light aircraft and immediately transfer to a helicopter which will take you to the remote starting point of your trail.  If you are walking, you will cover just over 20km in the 5 days and if you are travelling by canoe you will cover about 40km, all the while soaking up the scenery and experiencing the wildlife that you will come across.

All four nights will be spent in fly camps along the Selinda Spillway at pre-arranged sites.  You are not expected to erect your own tent or help with the cooking and camp chores as experienced staff are on hand. Walk-in 3m x 2.4m Flex-Bow tents are provided as they are comfortable and large enough for two people. Screened, bucket showers with hot and cold water are also supplied.

If you are canoeing, each canoe has two guests as well as their bed rolls and soft bags. You will paddle your own canoe each day going with the current. No previous paddling, canoeing or walking safari experience is needed but a moderate level of fitness is required.

On the pure walking trail you will be supplied with a day pack which will include water. You will always be accompanied by a qualified, armed walking guide as well as an experieced tracker as you explore the banks of the Spillway water and the more remote areas of the Selinda Reserve.
