Xakanaxa Camp overview
Xakanaxa Camp was one of Botswana’s first safari camps and, not surprisingly, has a first rate location in Moremi Game Reserve alongside the Khwai River by the lagoon that bears the camp’s name. From here you can take part in excellent year-round land and water-based activities. It’s hard to beat being in the midst of such a prolific wildlife area as Moremi.
There are 12 meru-style tents, spacious and light with screened windows along the full length of each side. There is also an ingenious water-spray system which keeps the tents cool.
Each is named after an African animal or bird. There are storage chests at the foot of the bed, chunky wooden furniture and woven rugs on the floor. Lamps provide light after dark. There’s an en-suite bathroom with a shower, hand basins and toilet, plus fluffy bathrobes. Flaps at the front of the tent can be pulled back so that, sitting up in bed, you can look out across the veranda to the African bush. There are loungers and tables on the veranda, perfect for relaxing in peace.
Xakanaxa’s main building is set on a high wooden platform built out over the river. Views of the water and islands are enthralling and will hold your attention for hours. The lounge and dining room are both contained in this structure and there’s a library you’re welcome to browse through. Outside a large deck is ideal for soaking up some sun and there’s a plunge pool for cooling off. The camp has a second, larger pool where you can go swimming. After dinner guests gather round the light of the campfire, reliving the day’s events.
With a range of habitats including savannah, seasonal floodplains, lagoons and water channels you’ll be able to search for wildlife on land and water, making for a really varied safari experience. All activities are led by experienced guides, eager to impart their knowledge of and love for the land, its people and wildlife.
The staff at this camp make it very special. The camp and tents are lovely, and the food, views and activities are wonderful, but the staff really do make this place shine. From the managers, guides, waitresses and chef, they all aim to make your stay that extra special. Would loved to have stayed longer.
