This week marks a very important event in Botswana’s calendar. September 30th sees the 50th anniversary of independence from Britain. Throughout the year the people of Botswana have been celebrating this milestone, and celebrations will culminate this Friday across the entire country.
At the time of independence, Botswana was one of Africa’s poorest countries. Fast forward 50 years and it is now undeniably one of Africa’s success stories. This is largely due to the discovery of diamonds and in more recent years beef production, and of course tourism.
Botswana really does have it all, a stable economy, wildlife, undeniably friendly people and stunning and varied landscapes throughout. If you haven’t thought about Botswana as a holiday destination before, there’s no time like the present. From the huge elephant populations of Chobe, to the crystal clear waters of the Okavango Delta, to the never ending landscapes of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana has something to offer every discerning traveller.
