Camp Moremi sits beside Xakanaxa Lagoon with woodland behind it, in the Mopane Tongue area of Moremi. We will be straight about one thing: this is a busy public part of the reserve rather than a private concession, so you will see other vehicles. It is busy for a good reason, because it is among the best wildlife areas in the whole Delta, but if solitude matters more to you than sightings, look at the Khwai camps instead.

The camp was rebuilt in May 2018 and is comfortably upmarket. Twenty-four guests at capacity, but with enough separate spaces that it never feels full and you can always find somewhere quiet.

The main lodge sits on a raised deck. The sunken bar is built around a huge termite mound and an ebony tree, which is the sort of detail that makes a place memorable. The lounge has proper sofas and leads through to a library and another deck, there are several dining spots each with a different view, and a raised boardwalk runs from the fire deck to the main area. The pool and loungers have a deck to themselves.

Food matters here, with both Western and local dishes, many meals served outdoors in the boma during the day, and a nightcap round the fire afterwards.

Activities are morning and afternoon game drives in Moremi plus motorboat rides on the lagoon and the nearby channels, which is what makes this camp work: you get both the land and the water without moving. The birding is exceptional, with fish eagle and malachite kingfisher regulars.
