Chief's Camp sits on Chief's Island in the Mombo concession, an exclusive private area inside Moremi. The land around it changes with the flood: dry floodplain for part of the year, placid lagoon for the rest, which keeps the game viewing interesting whenever you come.
We will be plain about the price. Chief's is expensive, and the reason is the wildlife rather than the thread count. This is one of the great game-viewing areas in Africa, known particularly for predators, and it very rarely disappoints. Large herds of antelope, buffalo and zebra, the lion that follow them, plus leopard, hyena and wild dog. There is also a genuine chance of rhino, which is true of almost nowhere else in Botswana.
The camp was substantially refurbished in 2016: the tents were enlarged, and a fitness centre and a children's playroom were added. The pavilions are large, thatched, on raised platforms under tall trees, with four-poster beds, a lounge area, a stocked minibar, air conditioning and fans, a Nespresso machine and Wi-Fi. Through screened sliding doors there is a veranda with your own plunge pool looking over the water.
The Geoffrey Kent Suite is the step beyond: two linked pavilions with their own lounge, outdoor dining area, boma and kitchen, and a dedicated housekeeper, waiter, guide and vehicle. It sleeps four to six, and it exists for people who would rather not see anybody else.
The main area is open-plan lounge, bar, dining room and gift shop with ceiling fans, a lower deck and a pool, and several decks placed for watching whatever comes to the waterhole in front of camp. Activities are game drives in Moremi and, for a gentler contrast, mokoro through the channels with a poler.
Ten pavilions with a large bedroom, bar, sitting area, minibar, safe, ceiling fan, air conditioning and emergency intercom. En suite with bath, twin basins, indoor and outdoor showers and a separate toilet. Full-length windows and folding doors open onto a private deck with shaded and sunny seating, a dining area and a plunge pool.
