Chilwero sits up on the ridge rather than down at the water, which gives it the long view and a good deal more peace. It is the most indulgent option on this stretch of the river, and the one we suggest when somebody wants the safari without giving up the comforts.

The suites are genuinely spacious, with light flooding in, a chaise longue at the foot of the bed, a covered terrace and a private garden of your own. The bathroom has a large tub, twin basins and a shower, with another shower outside. The pool suite adds a private plunge pool. Three of the suites are family suites with two bedrooms.

Between drives there is a spa with Vichy showers, hydrotherapy, an indoor spa bath and a treatment room set up in the trees, plus a split-level pool for the hottest part of the day. Meals come with wine from a properly stocked cellar. It is not a rustic bush camp and does not pretend to be.

Activities run into Chobe National Park for the elephant herds, with daytime cruises and a sundowner cruise on a double-deck boat. Fishing and Victoria Falls excursions can be arranged and paid for locally. You can also visit the Dipetsana Women's Bike Shop, set up with Sanctuary funding, or the Caracal rescue centre nearby.

Why we are happy to send you here. Sanctuary backs long-term, self-sustaining projects in the areas where it operates, working with the communities living alongside the parks rather than apart from them. Every booking we take also plants trees in deforested parts of Africa through The Travel Forest, and supports the Tribes Foundation.
