Eagle Island Lodge

Eagle Island is not a typical bush camp and does not try to be. It is the upmarket end of the Delta: twelve tented rooms, each with a private plunge pool, air conditioning, a four-poster bed under a mosquito net, and a cocktail mixing station in the room. Leica binoculars are provided.

We will be straight about who it suits. This is for travellers with deep pockets who want a genuinely luxurious base rather than a rustic one, and who would rather not compromise on comfort while they are out here. If that is you, it is superb. If you came for canvas and a bucket shower, look at Setari or Little Machaba instead.

The main area is generously sized and thatched, with lounge and dining either side of the Fish Eagle Bar and long views over the floodplains towards Chief's Island. From the bar you walk down to the jetty and the firepit, which is where drinks happen before and after dinner.

Activities are largely water-based and some are seasonal: mokoro, motorboat cruises, a sunset barge, walking safaris, birding, fishing and village visits. Helicopter flights and horse riding can be added. It combines well with its sister properties, Khwai River Lodge and Savute Elephant Lodge, if you want a circuit at the same level.
