Little Machaba opened in 2016 on the same island as its older sister camp, Machaba. Four tents and a maximum of eight guests makes it about as small as a camp gets, and that is the reason to come: you are not sharing sightings, or the dinner table, with twenty other people.
The sitting and dining areas sit on wooden decks with long views over the floodplain. Paths wind from there through the trees to each tent, also raised on decks, each with a bedroom, an en suite bathroom, an outdoor shower and a private lounge of its own.
Being in a private concession rather than the national park means you can drive off road and after dark. The range of activities suits both a first safari and a fifth: game drives morning and late afternoon, night drives after dinner, mokoro when the water allows, walking safaris, and village visits.
Between activities it is a genuinely relaxed place. There is a pool, a sundeck, a viewing deck, the camp's books, and you can have a massage in the privacy of your own tent. Meals are served in the shade of the dining tent or out on the deck.
Four tents sleeping a maximum of eight: two luxury tents and two family tents, all raised on wooden decks among the trees. En suite with basin, shower, flush toilet and toiletries, plus a separate outdoor shower, a sitting area, a private deck and charging points.
