Machaba is styled as a classic 1950s camp and pulls it off without tipping into pastiche: canvas, gauze windows, rugs on matting, lamps and comfortable sofas rather than designer minimalism. The riverfront position is the real asset, and the views come both from the main areas and from your own tent.
Game drives are the main event here, and crucially that includes night drives, which are not permitted inside the national park. Machaba sits in the community Khwai concession just across the water from Moremi, which gives you the wildlife of the reserve plus the freedom of private land.
The lounge is a proper one: large sofas and chairs, coffee tables, lamps, standing fans, big gauze windows and an extensive library. Meals are mostly buffet and eaten together in the adjoining area, though dinner often moves outside under the stars. The fire is lit in the evening and everyone gravitates to it. At the far end of camp there is a pool and sundeck.
The tents match the main areas: matting and coloured rugs, a sitting area, a writing desk, plenty of room, fans, and canvas flaps that zip up at night. You get your own supply of teas. The bathroom has an indoor and an outdoor shower, twin basins and a flush toilet.
Ten tents, eight with twin beds and two family tents, all with gauze windows on both sides, matting and rugs, a sitting area, a writing desk, fans and a private veranda. En suite with basin, shower and flush toilet, plus a separate outdoor shower.
