Sable Alley is a complete rebuild of the old Banoka bush camp. The position is the same and it is a good one, but nothing else carries over: this is a modern camp, all clean lines and contemporary decor rather than colonial nostalgia. If Machaba is the 1950s, Sable Alley is now.

The camp looks over a lagoon fed by the Khwai and Sable Alley rivers. The concession around it mixes riverine woodland, open floodplain, rivers and mopane, and that variety is why the wildlife is so good. Leopard, lion, wild dog, elephant and buffalo all turn up, and if you are lucky the sable that gives the place its name.

Twelve tents, all on wooden decks and all overlooking the lagoon, built from wooden frames and canvas with large mesh windows. Inside there is a spacious bedroom area, a writing desk, a dressing area and an en suite with both indoor and outdoor showers. Hot water and lighting are solar. Sliding doors lead to your own shaded deck.

The main area holds the lounge and bar with a covered dining area, though meals often move outside onto the deck by the pool and the firepit. There are hanging chairs, sunny and shaded decks and a small pool.

Activities are day and night game drives across a very large concession, right next to Moremi. When the water is high enough you can add mokoro, which is the classic Delta experience, or a motorboat. There is also the option of sleeping out under the stars in the Starbeds.

Why we are happy to send you here. Hot water and lighting are solar throughout, and the camp sits in the community-owned Khwai concession, so the fees go back to the Khwai community. Every booking we take also plants trees in deforested parts of Africa through The Travel Forest, and supports the Tribes Foundation.
