Sango is what a safari camp used to be before the industry discovered plunge pools. Large en suite Meru tents with wooden floors, screened windows and hand-crafted furniture, a shaded veranda over the Khwai River, and a bucket shower open to the sky that the staff fill with hot water when you ask. It is graded Modest, and the grading is honest, but do not read that as basic: it is simple by choice rather than by budget.
Six tents and a maximum of twelve guests makes for a genuinely friendly camp. You end up swapping sightings with the other guests by the fire or out on the viewing deck, meals are largely communal, and there is a plunge pool for the middle of the day when nothing much is moving. There is also a viewing hide.
The position is the other reason to come. From Sango you can work both Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai concession, which between them cover grassland, forest, river and seasonal floodplain. That variety of habitat is why the game viewing here is as good as it is.
Because Khwai is a private community concession rather than national park, you can do things the parks do not allow. Night drives run here, which is your only real chance at the nocturnal animals, and walking safaris let you read tracks and notice the small things. Mokoro trips run when the water allows.
Days settle into a rhythm: out early, back for the middle of the day, out again in the afternoon, sundowners round the fire, then dinner and bed with hippo and elephant audible outside the canvas.
Six en suite tents, rustic in style with a few touches of luxury: wooden floors, wooden storage chests, mesh windows with roll-down covers and a private veranda with chairs. Bathroom with ceramic basin, running water and a flush toilet, plus an outdoor bucket shower open to the sky.
Every trip we run is tailor-made, so if you want Sango Safari Camp on an itinerary that is not listed, just say.
