Okavango Khwai region

Okavango Khwai region

The Khwai Community Concession, or simply ‘Khwai’ for short is an area of diverse beauty which borders the Moremi Game Reserve to the east.  There are no fences between Moremi and Khwai so the wildlife is free to roam, and it does!

The Khwai area covers 1800km and has riverine woodland, open floodplains, mopane woodland and savannah. This diverse landscape attracts a huge variety of wildlife such as lechwe, buffalo, wild dog, leopard, elephants, lion, zebra, kudu, sable and bateleur eagles to name but a few.

The Khwai River is a big draw for game in the dry season as the only water source for miles around. Wildlife is drawn to the water from the drier areas further north such as Savute, but even in the green season this area usually produces excellent wildlife sightings and has a reputation for predators.

As Khwai is outside the national park you are able to enjoy both night drives and walking safaris, which are not possible in Moremi. Night drives offer a chance to see some of Botswana’s nocturnal animals which only become active after sunset, also this is the time that many predators seek out their next meal – night drives are very different to game drives during the day. Walking safaris also provide you with a different perspective on the landscape and the life it sustains, your senses become heightened and you’ll find interest in the smallest insects and marvel in the diverse flora that surrounds you.

A stay in Khwai, whether you are on a mobile safari or residing at one of the lodges or camps, benefits the local community who own this land. They generate an income from leasing parts of the concession to safari companies and many of them are employed in the tourism industry as both guides and lodge staff, ensuring you have a safari to remember. In turn the lodges take their social responsibility seriously and have a variety of projects in place to uplift the community and ensure they have access to healthcare and education.
